My Freshman CAS Experience

One creative, active, and service accomplishment.

01

Creativity: Painting my closet

During quarantine, I wanted to change my room's feel, so I decided to paint cow print on my white closet. It was a TikTok trend at the time and I thought it would be a great idea to take time to express my creativity on something I would wake up to every day.

I began by sketching the cow print with pencil and first did a lot of patterns, but later decided to reduce the number of spots to make the closet look cleaner and more realistic. I researched what paint would be the best to use on laminated wood and acrylic was the best because of its quick dry properties. I first lined the closet doors with masking tape to prevent the paint from getting on areas that would look messy. I then filled in the pattern as I found would look nice and let it dry overnight and removed the masking tape. I found this so fun that I started painting other furniture such as drawers, remotes, and calculators.

Activity: JV Volleyball

Sports have always been a big part of my life, and I have been playing volleyball since middle school. I was able to go to many competitions and events, but that all got cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I still continued to go to practice which also helped with my consistency. Through training, I was able to become the outside hitter and a power server. Playing volleyball was not only a way for me to stay fit and healthy but also a great way to meet new people and learn the importance of teamwork I found that it improved my stamina and overall strength.

Service: Home for the Blind with Multiple Disabilities

My dad moved to Thailand in 1995 to pioneer the chiropractic profession in Thailand. Since moving to Thailand he has dedicated a lot of his time to helping underprivileged children in the community.

When I turned seven he and my mom brought me to observe the charity work he was doing at the Home for the Blind with Multiple Disabilities. It was the first time I had ever seen children my age that were disabled, or blind. It was a very eye-opening experience for me since it taught me to be grateful for all the things I had. Since then, I have made it my goal to get involved in activities helping disadvantaged kids.  When I started Highschool, I began volunteering at a charity dedicated to helping disabled kids. I assisted with the physical therapy performed in the therapy room which is supervised by the center’s Staff Physical Therapist, and my father. My activities include helping with note-taking, organizing the equipment, and interacting with the kids to keep everything fun. Sometimes just holding one of the kid’s hands is the most valuable activity I can perform. They absolutely love the attention. Many of these kids have severe mental disabilities, in addition to being blind, with minimal, or no verbal communication skills. I have always been amazed at how we can communicate with them through a healing touch.  Despite their disabilities, they still have the ability to understand when someone is trying to help them and they always show their gratitude. Imagine having the ability to show gratitude when having to deal with such severe disadvantages. This experience has taught me that the most satisfying activities in life are those activities when we are helping others, rather than indulging our own desires.  I have also done many donation drives for the Mercy Center, which is another charity that serves orphaned children, street kids, and children with HIV. The serWIS club at my school has partnered with this charity.  I am very proud of all the work I have been able to do for both charities and will continue to provide all the services needed.
