Creativity: Cooking

From cooking, I learned important skills that I can apply to everyday tasks in college. The planning, preparation, and execution required for these creative tasks are similar to what is needed to manage my time efficiently and to complete assignments in college.

Cooking also taught me the importance of attention to detail, as I had to carefully follow recipes, measure ingredients, and monitor cooking times. These skills are essential for college students to develop as they work on complex assignments and projects. Cooking salmon and grilling chicken also taught me patience and perseverance. Sometimes, it took several attempts to perfect a recipe, but I learned that persistence is key to achieving success. I learned how to make lemon butter salmon and paprika chicken. Similarly, in college, I may encounter challenges or setbacks, and it is important to stay motivated and keep trying until I find a solution. Cooking encouraged me to be creative and experimental, as there are many ways to prepare and season different meats. This taught me to approach assignments and projects in college with a similar mindset, applying my creativity and problem-solving skills to find new and innovative solutions. Cooking also taught me important life skills such as budgeting, nutrition, and time management. These skills are essential for future college students as I had to learn to balance my academic responsibilities with my personal life. Overall, cooking was a fun and rewarding experience that taught me valuable skills applicable to everyday tasks in college and beyond.

Activity: Varsity Volleyball

The transition from junior volleyball to varsity was a very eye opening experience. Playing varsity volleyball has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Not only have I developed my athletic abilities, but I have also learned valuable life lessons that I will carry with me long after I graduate.

Being a part of a team has taught me the importance of communication and collaboration. During games and practices, we must work together to execute plays and strategies. I have learned how to communicate effectively with my teammates, both on and off the court. We rely on each other's strengths to succeed and overcome challenges. Playing varsity volleyball has also taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. In practice, we push ourselves to the limit, working on improving our skills and conditioning. We also learn to bounce back from losses and mistakes, using them as motivation to improve. I have also developed my leadership skills as a member of the team. Whether it's encouraging my teammates during a game or organizing team events off the court, I have learned how to take initiative and lead by example. This experience has helped me to develop my confidence and interpersonal skills. Finally, playing varsity volleyball has taught me to embrace challenges and to never give up. The game can be unpredictable, and there are times when we may feel discouraged. But I have learned to stay focused on our goals and to push through even the toughest situations. Overall, playing varsity volleyball has been an incredible experience that has taught me valuable life skills that I will carry with me long after I graduate. I am grateful for the friendships I have made and the lessons I have learned through this sport.

Service: Home for the Blind with Multiple Disabilities

This charity has been a major part of my learning experience and has been a continuous personal project since freshman year. I wrote my college essay later on about it which I think would have an impact on admissions teams.

Volunteering at the home for the blind with multiple disabilities has been an incredibly eye-opening and rewarding experience. Working with children who have various disabilities, including blindness, has taught me so much about empathy, patience, and resilience. From the first day I started volunteering, I was struck by the courage and strength of the children I worked with. Despite the challenges they face every day, they were full of joy and enthusiasm. They reminded me to be grateful for my own blessings and to never take anything for granted. As a volunteer, I helped with various tasks, including assisting with daily activities, playing games with the children, and helping them with their studies. One of the most important things I learned during my time there was the value of listening. Many of the children were eager to share their stories and experiences, and it was important for me to be an attentive and empathetic listener. Another valuable lesson I learned was the importance of creativity and adaptability. Many of the children had unique needs, and it was important for me to be creative in finding ways to help them. For example, I had to find ways to explain concepts to children who could not see or read, and find ways to engage children who had difficulty communicating verbally. Overall, volunteering at the home for the blind with multiple disabilities was a humbling and enriching experience. I learned so much about myself, about others, and about the power of kindness and empathy. It was a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of those around us. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to volunteer at the home and to have been a small part of the lives of these amazing children.
